We are a shortline freight-only railroad, which means that we solely serve industry in southern Indiana with rail connections linking our region to the national network. We focus on the first-mile freight moves, while the major railroads focus on the long haul. This collaboration allows us to offer the best in both over the road and local freight service.
Our Footprint
Madison Railroad operates a 25-mile mainline extending from Madison to North Vernon, Indiana. In addition to the mainline, the Madison Railroad owns and operates 14 miles of railroad track within a 3,400-acre industrial park in the former Jefferson Proving Grounds offering railcar and locomotive storage.
In 2022, we purchased 22-acres in Madison dedicated to expanding our regional transloading capabilities.
We haul a variety of commodities, including polyethylene, coal by-products and steel. We partner with our communities to provide competitive service, economic growth incentives, and site-development services.

First Flare & Repair
First Flare has partnered with the Madison Railroad to flare tank cars prior to change of service, repair, cleaning, lease return or scrapping. First Flare’s services are available in Madison WITHOUT costly mobilization fees.
